Sunday lunch to midnight in one press.

The brief

The clients came to us through Meiger Kitchens and Interiors, wanting to convert a disused gym into a bar where they could entertain and hold parties without anyone having to come through the rest of the house. They asked for a night-club level sound system they could stream to and a DJ could plug into.

The screen that disappears

A large projection screen was wanted for sport, on the condition that it vanished when it was not in use. A JVC laser projector does the picture, and the screen retracts out of sight.

The sky light

The room has a huge sky light, which in summer made it uncomfortably hot. Lutron roller blinds were added to the glazing and put on the same control as everything else, so the room manages its own temperature before anyone notices it needs to.

Night-club levels, in a house

For the sound there was only one honest answer, which was to install an actual night-club system. Void Acoustics is our partner of choice for that: six wall-mounted speakers in the corners of the room, and a large subwoofer hidden under the bench seating. Pioneer decks take care of the DJ, and Control4 ties the lot together.

The result

A room that runs from a quiet Sunday afternoon to a full party on one press, with sound that would not embarrass a small venue.
