Bang & Olufsen, integrated rather than islanded

A hundred years of Danish design, aluminium and oak, and active loudspeakers that measure far better than their looks suggest. We specify it where design leads, and we make it work with the rest of the house.

01 The partnership

The point is that it does not sit on its own.

Bang & Olufsen is bought with the eyes as much as the ears. The failure mode is predictable: a beautiful television and a pair of Beolabs living in their own world, on their own remote.

  • Televisions and speakers brought into Control4 or KNX as proper sources.
  • Motorised covers, stands and speaker positions on scenes rather than remotes.
  • Room compensation set for the actual position, not the showroom one.
  • One handset, or better, one keypad, for the whole room.

Done properly, a room with a Beovision in it works like every other room in the house.

03 The brand

A hundred years of not following anyone.

Bang & Olufsen was founded in Struer, Denmark in 1925 and has spent a century treating audio equipment as furniture and as engineering at the same time. Aluminium, oak and glass are used as materials rather than finishes, and the industrial design has been genuinely influential for most of that time.

The engineering is better than the brand is given credit for. Beolab speakers are active, with amplification and DSP built in, room compensation, and bass linearisation that lets a small cabinet behave. The company also now designs for longevity, with modular repairs and upgrades rather than replacement.

04 The range

What we specify.

Chosen where the equipment is part of the interior. Where performance per pound is the brief, we say so and specify differently.

FamilyWhat it isWhere we use it
Beolab speakers
Active floor-standing and compact loudspeakers with onboard DSP and room compensation. The core of most B&O rooms.
Living · Music rooms
Beosound
Wireless and wall-mounted music systems, from compact to sculptural, for rooms that want one object rather than a system.
Kitchens · Studies
Beovision televisions
Television with proper integrated sound, motorised covers or stands, and cabinetry rather than a bezel.
Living · Snugs
Beosound Theatre
A soundbar built to B&O standards, for rooms where a full cinema system would be the wrong answer.
Snugs · Bedrooms
Beoremote
The handset, aluminium and weighted. Useful, and still not a substitute for the room being on a scene.
Any B&O room
Integration drivers
The layer that puts all of the above inside the house control system as sources and scenes.

05 How we specify it

How we advise on it.

This is the one brand on the page where we start by asking what the room is for, because the honest answer changes the recommendation completely.

Driver 01

Is the object part of the room?

If the client wants a beautiful piece of equipment in a designed interior, B&O is very hard to beat and the money is well spent. If the equipment should be invisible, architectural speakers cost less and perform better.

Driver 02

How much integration is wanted

A single Beosound in a kitchen needs nothing from us. A Beovision, motorised covers and three pairs of Beolabs across a house needs proper integration work, and that is where our time goes.

Driver 03

Performance per pound

For a dedicated listening room or a cinema, the same budget spent on other brands will measure better. We will tell you that plainly, and then respect the decision either way.

Indicative only. A design visit produces a fixed price.

08 Common questions

Bang & Olufsen, honestly answered.

If you want a beautiful object in a designed room, yes. If you want the best measured performance per pound, no, and we will specify something else. Both are legitimate briefs and we would rather ask than assume.

Yes, and it should. Drivers bring televisions and speakers into the house system as sources, so a room turns on from a keypad and motorised covers move on a scene rather than a separate remote.

No. Beolab speakers are active, with amplification and DSP inside, matched to the drivers at the factory. That simplifies the rack considerably.

Less than you would expect. Room compensation measures the position and adjusts for it, which is a sensible piece of engineering given where these speakers usually end up.

Repairable, deliberately. The current design programme is built around longevity and modular upgrade rather than replacement, which is unusual in consumer electronics and worth crediting.

Rarely. For a dedicated room we specify cinema loudspeakers and a Trinnov processor. B&O belongs in living spaces, where it is doing something no cinema brand attempts.

We visit, listen, measure, and come back with drawings and a fixed price. If another platform suits the house better, we will tell you that too.
