Light on water, held at exactly the right level.
Our first job for this client, alongside the developer who built the room. A new pool hall, and a brief that came down to one sentence: it should feel calm, and nobody should have to learn anything.
Almost all of the light in the room is concealed: a couple of hundred metres of it, tucked into coves and edges. Light like that is unforgiving: dimmed badly it steps, flickers and shimmers on the water. Getting it to fade smoothly from bright to almost nothing took the right control gear and an evening in the room setting levels by eye.
Speakers in the ceiling give even sound across the whole hall rather than a loud end and a quiet end, and they play the same music as the rest of the house. The television at one end sends its sound through those same ceiling speakers, so you can follow it from the far side of the pool without it being loud anywhere.
The access point is hidden behind one of the ceiling speakers. Full coverage across the room, and nothing on the ceiling to look at.
